We are thrilled to announce the appointment of Paul Cantwell as the new Head Coach of the Yorkshire Dragons! After 23 years Chris Mellor has decided now is the time to step down from the role of Head Coach and be assistant to Paul.
Paul brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of success, holding head coaching postions in America and most recently representing Manchester Giants in the BBL for three seasons as lead assistant coach. Currently he is the Director and Head Coach at Xaverian Elite Basketball Academy in Manchester.
Known for his dynamic coaching style, player development focus, and passion for the game, Paul is set to usher in an exciting new chapter for our club. He brings a tone of basketball IQ with bags of enthusiasm to make Yorkshire Dragons a team that excels.
This appointment comes at a pivotal time as we continue to build on our legacy developed by Chris Mellor and following our rebrand from the Bradford Dragons to the Yorkshire Dragons just a few weeks ago! With Paul at the helm, we are confident in our vision to grow stronger, compete harder, and inspire the next generation of basketball talent across Yorkshire.
Join us in giving Paul a warm Yorkshire welcome as we prepare for an electrifying season ahead in the new British Championship Basketball league!
“I’m honoured to join the Yorkshire Dragons and lead this talented group of players. The club has a rich history and a passionate fan base, and I’m excited to be part of its future”.

A Legend Transition: Thank You, Chris Mellor
As we welcome a new chapter with Paul Cantwell as Head Coach, we also take a moment to honour a true legend of our club — Chris Mellor.
After an extraordinary 23 years at the helm, Chris has decided now is the time for him to step down as Head Coach of the Yorkshire Dragons. His leadership, dedication, and passion have shaped the identity of this club and inspired generations of players and fans alike.
Under Chris’s guidance, the Dragons achieved countless milestones, built a strong community presence, and developed a culture of resilience and respect. His impact goes far beyond the court — he has been a mentor, a motivator, and the heart of our team.
He guided the club from the Bradford League, to the Yorkshire League and then finally all the way up to National League Division 1 (now BCB), where we are now. He has won many accolades on the way including coach of the year award multiple times!
We are proud to share that Chris will continue to be part of the Dragons family as Assistant Coach and will continue to lead the Academy teams, where his experience and insight will remain invaluable.
From everyone at the club — thank you, Chris, for everything. You are, and always will be, a Dragon.
